1. Exploring the Geology of Australian Landforms
Taken from SEN Vol 52 No. 3 2003 p 138 from Uniserv education.
Australia may be an old worn-down continent, but it has some very interesting landforms, including mountains, islands, rivers, and deserts. In this activity you are asked to select a landform then do some research about it. You can use library and Internet resources, but remember to keep a list of books and pages you have used.
You will need to include a map to show the location of the landform. In your work, describe the landform and include a picture.
Then outline:
- How it was formed
- What rock types are found there
- How the rocks were formed
- When it formed
- What has happened between the time of formation and the present day
- The meaning of any terms used
Some places that could be researched:
- Western Australia: wave rock, Wolf Creek crater
- Queensland: Great Barrier reef, Fraser Island, Undarra Tunnels, Glass House Mountains National Park
- Tasmania: Mt. Field glaciation
- Northern Territory: Devil’s Marbles, Gosses Bluff, Mt Connor, Mt. Ebenezer
- New South Wales: Breadknife, Warrumbungles, Jenolan Caves, Blue Mountains, Kiama Blowholes
- South Australia: Mt. Schank, Wilpena Pound
- Victoria: Organ Pipes National Park, Keilor, Twelve Apostles, Tower Hill
This is an idea that can be used for Stage 4 Rocks and Minerals (New Syllabus Stage 4 Change). It can also be used for a secondary source Depth Study emphasising finding good quality references and developing a proper bibliography.
2. Use of CUBE
Use of CUBE to help students engage with test questions and provide good responses to longer answer questions. This can be used at all Stages for secondary science. Maybe Stage 3 could start using this if students are answering longer types of questions in the science class.
STANSW encourages you to also contribute your ideas that work in the science classroom, whether it be Primary or Secondary science Stages. If you submit an idea, please indicate the Stage/stages it can be used for. These ideas can include:
· A good science teaching resource
· An assessment idea for science
· A science education research project or idea
· An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander science idea
· A good idea for the science classroom
